MV Karwela was built in West Germany in 1957 as the passenger ferry Frisia II. She came to Malta in 1986 and ran tourist trips for Captain Morgan Cruises until 2002. The Gozo Tourism Association scuttled her off Xatt l-Aħmar on 12 August 2006, the same day as MV Cominoland.

The wreck is about 50 metres long and sits upright on sand, with the top deck at around 30 metres and the seabed at about 40 metres. Large openings were cut along the first two decks, and a central staircase leads down to a lower deck lit by portholes. It is the most dived wreck in Gozo.

She is normally dived from the shore, with the bow about 80 metres from the entry point. As a deep dive with short bottom times, it suits experienced divers.
