Fessej Rock is a pillar of rock that rises about 15 metres out of the sea just off the mouth of Mġarr ix-Xini, on Gozo’s south coast. It is dived by boat, since land access crosses private property.

Boats usually moor over a plateau at about 10 metres on the western, shallower side. From there the usual plan is to drop down and circle the rock, spiralling up as you go. The base lies at about 50 to 60 metres on the deep eastern side, so choose your depth before you start. Boulders, overhangs and swim-throughs line the wall. Grouper, dentex, barracuda, bream and the odd tuna are seen on the deep side, with octopus, painted comber and small fish in the shallower crevices.

The rock is exposed to current and surge and is best dived in a north-westerly wind. Watch your depth closely, as the wall keeps going.
