One of the most spectacular beaches in Gozo, Dwejra is sought after by many tourists especially in summer for its scenery and clear water. It is home to one of Europe’s most popular diving spots, known as the Blue Hole. Not so long ago, the site was blessed with the iconic Azure Window. The natural rock formation is now underwater after it collapsed in 2017. The site was used as a backdrop for a couple of scenes to the popular HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’.

Dwejra also hosts an ‘inland sea’ area. The sea here is generally calmer even when strong winds batter the area making it ideal for a swim. The area also has a small pebbled beach.

Tourists and trekking enthusiasts visit the area even in winter to see the iconic Fungus Rock and to walk on the cliffs.

Getting there

Dwejra is on Gozo's west coast beyond San Lawrenz. From Victoria, drive through San Lawrenz and follow the Dwejra signs to the end of the road; if you use Google Maps, searching 'Azure Window' gets you there more reliably than 'Dwejra Bay'. Bus 311 runs from Victoria to San Lawrenz (Dwejra) and is roughly hourly, so plan your return.

Parking

There is a free public car park at the end of the road. It is a dead end and spaces can run short in peak season when tour coaches arrive.

Good to know

The Azure Window arch collapsed in March 2017, so this page covers the swimming area by the old arch site: flat, uneven rock with the Blue Hole, a deep pool that opens to the open sea and is popular with divers and snorkellers. Go only on calm days, since it is dangerous in rough seas; on windy days the Inland Sea nearby is the safer swim. There is no sand or shade on the rocks, and the area is a good sunset spot, with Fungus Rock and the cliffs to explore.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Azure Window still there?

No. The arch collapsed into the sea in March 2017. Its remains underwater are now a dive site, and the Blue Hole beside it is still there.

Can you swim at the Azure Window site?

Yes, in calm weather you can swim and snorkel at the Blue Hole from the rocks. In rough seas it is dangerous, so use the Inland Sea instead.

Is there parking at Dwejra?

Yes, there is a free public car park at the end of the road, though it gets busy in summer.

How do I get to Dwejra by bus?

Take bus 311 from Victoria to the San Lawrenz (Dwejra) stop. It runs roughly every hour.
