The Inland Sea at Dwejra, on Gozo’s west coast, is a shallow lagoon about 60 metres across, joined to the open sea by a natural tunnel about 80 metres long. Divers enter from the shore at the boathouses and swim through the tunnel.

The tunnel floor starts at about 3 metres in the lagoon and slopes down over pebbles and boulders to about 26 metres at the seaward end. There the light changes to deep blue and the walls outside drop away to 40 metres and more. You can follow the wall north or south and come back through the tunnel, or carry on to Azure Reef and exit at the Blue Hole. Eagle rays are sometimes seen over the sand outside.

Small tourist boats use the tunnel, so stay close to the sides, especially when surfacing in the shallows. The lagoon makes this a good option on windy days.
