The Santa Maria Caves lie in a small inlet on the north side of Comino, a short boat ride from Gozo or Malta. A cluster of caverns and swim-throughs sits side by side along the reef, most of them wide and open with daylight showing at the far end.

Inside, the walls are covered in colourful sponges and the light is very pretty. There is plenty of fish life around the entrances, and a torch helps in the darker recesses.

The site is reached by boat only. Average depths are around 7 to 10 metres, and the seabed further out from the wall drops to roughly 16 metres. The caves are open and suitable for all levels, though they are popular, so expect other groups, and keep clear of the boat traffic around Comino.
