Mġarr ix-Xini

One of the most scenic places to swim in Gozo, Imgarr ix-Xini is found in the limits of Xewkija. As you meander through the verdant valley leading to the bay, you’re greeted by the serene sight of crystal-clear waters cradled at the base of lush slopes, offering a secluded sanctuary for those seeking solace away from the hustle and bustle. The bay starts with shallow water but there are rocky parts you can venture around in the valley which allow you to jump straight into the deep, blue water.

While Mġarr ix-Xini maintains a low-key profile with minimal facilities, it boasts a quaint, unique restaurant that is a local favourite. It won’t be the cheapest meal you eat in Gozo, but the seafood there is fresh and delicious (try the sardines on toast!).

Adding to its allure, Mġarr ix-Xini gained cinematic fame as the picturesque setting for the movie ‘By the Sea,’ starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 2015. This brush with Hollywood has only heightened the bay’s appeal, inviting movie enthusiasts and romantics alike to walk in the footsteps of stars, amidst the natural splendor of Gozo. Beyond its cinematic charm, Mġarr ix-Xini is a popular spot for scuba divers and free divers alike.

Getting to this bay should be straight-forward enough if you follow GPS. Be aware that the entry in and out of the bay is a steep hill, and there is usually parking to be found at the bottom of the hill.
