The Madonna is a statue of Our Lady set in a small cave on the reef wall off Ċirkewwa, reached from Susie’s Pool beside the Gozo ferry terminal. The Amphibians Diving Club placed it in November 1987 and added a plaque inside the cave for its 20th anniversary in 2007.

The dive starts from the shallow rocky plateau at about 6 metres, used by many centres for skills practice, and follows the wall to the statue at around 18 metres. Along the way there are nudibranchs, sea hares, wrasse and, in the shallows, cuttlefish.

It is an easy shore dive from Susie’s Pool. The wall continues down to about 30 metres, so keep an eye on your gauge, and expect company: Ċirkewwa is one of Malta’s busiest dive spots.
