Għar Lapsi is a small rocky inlet on Malta’s south coast, below Siġġiewi, and one of the few easy shore entries on that side of the island. Divers walk down a steep path from the car park and wade in or step off the slippery slipway into shallow water.

The main attraction is a shallow cave system more than 40 metres long, entered near the tip of the small concrete jetty. Cracks and holes in the roof let in plenty of sunlight, and a side tunnel leads to a small air pocket; keep your regulator in, as the air is not always fresh. Outside there is sand with stargazers and flatfish, and a wall with sponges and tubeworms. Most of the dive stays above 15 metres.

The cove is sheltered from north-easterly winds, but currents and surge can be strong, especially in the caves. Don’t dive it when the sea is rough.
